Cholesterol Lowering Coffee Alternatives & Alkaline Diets

A friend of mine recently recommended a coffee alternative called Teeccino. Described to me as delicious and ‘my hubby didn’t notice he wasn’t drinking regular coffee’, she had me well and truly interested! So I went away and did some research on it myself.

Teeccino is described as healthy, gluten free and alkaline. It’s also packed with antioxidants. Sounds good? Well, according to the Teeccino website, it’s America’s number 1 coffee alternative. And by looking at some of the benefits below, you can see why:

  •  Teeccino contains nutrients from herbs, grains, fruits and nuts. These nutrients are easily  absorbed when brewed, as they are suspended in liquid and don’t require digestion.
  •  Great for digestive health, as it is alkaline and contains the prebiotic, inulin.
  •  Source of potassium (which also helps to neutralise acidity) and soluble fibre for a healthy heart. Also helps to lower cholesterol.
  •  No side effects from caffeine and no cholesterol heightening decaffeinated coffee.
  • Natural energy boost from the nutrients, rather than from stimulants.

I decided to have a look for companies here in the UK who might stock it, and I found two gems that day. My new favourite hot drink, and the lovely Energise for Life (a site who specialise in alkaline products). Within minutes of entering the site and browsing the Teeccino, I’d had a lovely little conversation and had secured myself some samples to try out and review. What lovely, friendly people.

Within minutes of my package of goodies arriving, I’d delved right in. I discovered that there were coffee ‘teabags’ as well as sachets of loose coffee which could be prepared in the same way as regular coffee. So you get that coffee feeling too… sounds silly, but I love it!

And look at the great range of yummy flavours – from your rich French Roasts and Javas, to mocha and vanilla flavours. Not to forget the Dandelion Caramel Nut, which fast became my favourite! Each of the flavours is rich and satisfying. It’s easy to get that rich, strong plain taste, or a sweet and subtle caramel or vanilla (without the sugary syrups).

And yes, in my honest opinion, it tastes as good as coffee. I can tell it’s not coffee, but it has a richer, deeper flavour and there’s just so much going on inside, in terms of taste and combinations. It also tastes much better than my usual decaffeinated coffee. And I can drink it knowing that it’s good for me!

It’s also really easy to make – add around a tablespoon into a coffee press, or machine with enough water for a large mug and brew as with regular coffee. Or simply pop a ‘teebag’ into a cup and wait 3-5 minutes. I usually add a little bit of natural agave to sweeten, and some dairy free coconut milk.

If you want to try out six of the loose filter flavours, you can buy a sample pack for just £3.99 here! I’m completely converted and just love the variety of flavours and taste combinations in every mouthful.

Anyway, in discovering the Energise for Life website, I started to read a little more about the alkaline diet, and became quite interested. The alkaline diet is one abundant in nutritionally dense foods, containing alkaline salts, greens, whole grains, clean proteins and omega oils. There is a focus on cutting out ‘acid foods’ such as fizzy drinks, chocolates, sweets, dairy etc… and this is combined with exercise, relaxation and alkaline water consumption.

Benefits of an alkaline diet include increased energy, better skin, more balanced hormonal system, a stronger immune system and increased digestion. It can also help with fertility and pregnancy. To name but a few. There’s loads more information on the Energise for Life website where you can find out more and stock up on great alkaline products.

If you’re interested, you can also find them on Facebook and find out when they are running events and talks. They offer the full package for a healthy, alkaline lifestyle and it’s definitely something I’d like to explore more in the future.

I’m off to make another cup of Teecino… if you try it, please let me know what you think!

Do they come in Keurig pods?

    1. Hello. They don’t, as far as I know they only come as ‘tee’ bags or loose.
