During Zero Waste Week, I was lucky enough to be offered a nice little discount on the lovely Boobalou website. It’s like a waste saving haven of goodness. And don’t forget, waste not only saves the planet, it saves your pocket too. So, here are some of the bits I purchased from the site and some feedback on my experiences.
My absolute favourite has to be the Hankybook – far right. it’s as simple as it sounds, just a cute little fabric book, which saves carrying around several hankies, and with each page easily folded and tucked in once used. Throw it in your bag and it will save you an absolute fortune on little packs of tissues, napkins or wipes. Not to mention the amount of trees you’ll be saving. A hankybook costs just £5.50 and can be thrown into your washing machine again and again. I love mine, it’s just so versatile and looks better than a big old hankie, crumpled up in your bag or pocket!
Another absolute wonder is the superbly named ‘UnSponge’. We’re all slaves to those squidgy foam sponges with the thin scourer on the other side. These quickly become germy and stinky and the scourer rarely lasts more than one or two uses. Then they’re off to the landfill and we reach for another. Not any more! The UnSponge is made from remnants of terry cloth and cotton, and I found it so much more effective than a basic throw away. Plus it can be used on tops, sinks, baths, anywhere really, and it just keeps giving. No need to throw away, just throw it in the machine again.
I decided to add the bamboo pot scraper, for those extra hard to clean pots and pans. And there you have it. No more waste, and saved pennies. At just £4 for two unsponges, you’ll soon me counting the savings.
And a few bits for the ladies now – who knew that time of the month could be so much fun and filled with exciting new accessories? Well, you can buy some really pretty reusable sanitary pads. They’re not dirty, they’re not smelly, they’re just so much more practical and eco-friendly (and yes, I did get one with the Tardis on)! And the money we all spend on sanitary products every year would scare you! Over 5 years, it’s estimated that we spend £120-£300 on towels, pads and tampons. In comparison, simply using reusable towels or pads, and a moon-cup for example, will cost you between £39-£60. And just think of the resources and landfill you will save too!
There are so many more amazing products on Boobalou, from reusable sandwich wrap to nappies. Future generations will thank us, and with all that money you’ve saved, you’ll be able to go on a nice holiday to escape the cold weather that’s starting to set in!
Zero Waste Week may be over for this year, but it’s never too late to make a change! Thanks for reading and have fantastic week! Keep warm!
