This year I’d like to share with you a range of ideas on making your Christmas as eco-friendly and ethical as possible. I’ll be sharing tips for saving waste and money, as well as some lovely recipes and gift ideas.
On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me, a partridge in a pear tree… A pretty great present from the Rainforest Alliance, for anyone who loves trees, is to adopt them a rainforest!
Home to half of all the species on Earth, rainforests are disappearing at the eye-watering rate of 38 million acres a year (that’s one football field every 78 seconds!).
The Adopt-A-Rainforest scheme helps small conservation groups in tropical countries that are working to stop rainforest destruction. From helping to protect the pristine paradise of southern Belize, to adopting the ancient oak forest in the tropical Andes to helping to save El Salvador’s last expanse of rainforest, every donation – no matter how big or small – can make a huge difference.
Perhaps you’d like to help this little guy here. His home in the cloud-forests (elevated above 1000 metres) of Nicaragua (and around the Tropics worldwide) are rapidly disappearing. Your donation to this project will help a local conservation group to offer assistance to coffee growers, making their methods more sustainable. It will also help to stop the illegal extraction of orchids and birds, and given local school children a chance to plant tree seedlings on each visit.
To get started, simply pick your favourite project, and either post your donation or make it online. You’ll be emailed a certificate to print out. It’s the perfect way to treat your loved one and Mother Nature this Christmas!
