I wanted to start January the way I mean to continue the year… by soothing my stresses and worries away, and spending more time in a state of relaxation and mindfulness. I only wish I could visit Ayurveda Pura Spa in North Greenwich every single week, as their Full Body Massage left me feeling truly blissful and almost separate to the world around me.
Before I tell you more about my experiences of the unique massage techniques, I wanted to explain a little about Ayurveda and exactly what it is. Ayurveda is the ancient holistic medical system from India. It aims to achieve harmony (both physical and mental) with nature. If you are imbalanced in any of your constitution, this is likely to manifest as an illness or issue with the body. Ayurveda seeks to bring back this balance, be it through massage, remedies, nutritional/lifestyle advice and/or selected yoga exercises.
Prior to the massage, my body type (Vata, Pitta or Kapha – you can read about these in more detail on the website and also complete a survey to discover your body type) was determined by the lovely Dr Deepa Apte (qualified medical doctor and Ayurvedic practioner), who explained to me some of the basic principles of Ayurveda and informed me that there was definitely some imbalance of my Prakrti (the unique combination I was born with). This test helped to determine the type of massage and I needed.
The room itself was perfectly prepared for relaxation, soft lighting, gentle music to help you meditate to drift off in your comfortable surroundings. The massage was completely different to any I’ve experienced before. There was no hard pressure, or deep muscle manipulation, just lots and lots of oil and long, warming strokes. I could feel the tension melting away, and areas of stress/pain were quickly soothed.
The hands of the masseuse never left my body, and there was an almost rhythmic pattern to the strokes. I found myself sinking into a deep meditative state in response to this and completely forgot everything else around me for the hour. The perfect way to rest your mind and body alike.
The oils and combination of massage are also used to detoxify and cleanse the skin, so it’s essential to shower afterwards, to remove the oil, and also the toxins. The warm water only added to my relaxation, followed by a delicious cup of herbal tea, as I gradually became aware of the world around me again.
When I left the spa, almost two hours after entering, I felt a sense of calm, and the world around me almost seemed separate. I felt as though everything else was going on around me, whilst I was in my own bubble. This is the feeling I wish I could recreate on a daily basis. Truly relaxed, mindful and in the moment.
I was also given a lovely goody bag, full of products for my body type, including my now favourite, De-Stress herbal tea. I am currently enjoying pampering myself with these, and there will definitely be another post in the near future!
I highly recommend Ayurveda Pura; they have a wide range of facial and body treatments, as well as the full body massage, so there’s something for everyone. More than just a massage, you feel balanced and revitalised, ready to face the world again.
I received this treatment and products free of charge from Ayurveda Pura. All opinions are my own.
