Coral Reef Friendly, Chemical Free Sun Protection

It’s holiday season! For those of us in the UK and Ireland, it’s very hard to see much evidence of that right now, but I’m sure the sun will smile on us soon! Maybe you’re lucky enough to be jetting off somewhere warmer. Either way, you may be looking to protect your skin from sun damage.  There are many different views on sun protection, and it’s hard to know which suggestion to follow to keep your skin in the best condition.

Sun

Some views suggest that over-use of sun-lotion stops us absorbing our requirement of Vitamin D. On the other hand, too much sun can lead to skin cancer. I really don’t think that avoiding sun lotion when out in intense sunshine, or out for long periods of the day is an option. Perhaps you can pop round the corner to the shops, or walk from your office to the station, but any level of exposure which will result in burning, I’m sure can’t be good for us.

The most important thing is finding a sun lotion which isn’t going to do you more harm than good. Most on the market contain chemical filters such as oxybenzone and homosalate.  These chemicals may prevent the rays of the sun from reaching our delicate skin, but they actually penetrate our skin themselves and create allergies and toxic side effects. Many have been found to disrupt estrogen and other hormones in the body.

On the other hand, natural mineral filters like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide have shown minimal skin penetration and no impact on hormones. These are the mineral filters found in natural sun lotions such as Lovea.

Lovea

MyPure kindly sent me a bottle of Lovea’s Factor 30 Organic Sunscreen Spray. It has high UVA/UVB ratings, is water resistant and contains only natural ingredients. Completely cruelty free, vegan and not tested on animals, this sunscreen is also free from any of the chemicals which can cause damaged to coral reefs.

Being that we’ve only stay-cationed this year, I haven’t had the largest number of opportunities to try it out, but when I have, it’s been wonderful! The spray bottle makes it so easy to apply – no more messing around with awkward lids or leaks in your bag!

It has a lovely delicate smell, from the blend of essential oils, and it’s just the right texture that makes it easy to rub in. You can easily see where you’ve applied to to start with, but it very quickly soaks in and doesn’t leave streaks or white marks.

As to its effectiveness, I’d have to give it a 10/10. No burns, no need to re-apply as frequently as some lotions and no irritation. I have really pale skin and burn almost as quick as looking at the sun, so I love this stuff! The best thing is, it’s suitable for both the body and face, so no need for two separate bottles!

The factor 30 is just £15.99 for 125ml, which I think compares really well with the well known (chemical loaded) brands on the market. They also offer Factor 15, Factor 50 for children and a Factor 50 face cream, as well as an aftersun.

Safe, effective and easy to use! Plus it’s coral reef friendly. There’s nothing more that I could ask for!

So, if you’re off to soak up the sun – happy holidays! Thanks for reading!
