Hate Food Waste, Love Snact…

Have a think about how much food you throw away every week? Do you take advantage of multi-buy offers, just to get better value, only to end up throwing half of it in the bin? Perhaps you throw away the crusts of your bread, or half packs of veggies when they’ve not been used and start to turn.  Maybe you’re super efficient at using everything in your kitchen, and all of your scraps and peelings go to a compost heap or food waste bin (if you’re lucky enough to have a council which offers this service). Whether you’re a food waster or a super user, you’ll probably be astounded to hear just how much food is wasted in the UK every year – a staggering 15 million tonnes, and 50% of that comes from our homes (not just the naughty supermarkets).

FoodWaste

In fact, globally, a entire third of the food grown is thrown away, even though much of it could actually be used. This is horrifying when you think of how many people in the world are starving, and the number of people in the UK who rely on food banks.

There are a number of supermarkets and stores starting to address this issue worldwide, with fines for food waste in France, and ‘wonky’ veg boxes and bags being sold at bargain prices.

Snact

There’s also a lovely company called Snact, who make fruit jerky snacks from surplus fruits, which would otherwise be thrown away – simply for being a funny shape or size. It’s amazing just how many good quality fruits and veggies get rejected before reaching the shelf, just because they don’t look “perfect”. Really? What is perfect anyway? And why is good food being judged on appearance? We really are a funny species!

Snact began back in 2013, collecting surplus fruit at London’s markets, and selling at various events across London. With a little help from Crowdfunding, Snact were soon bigger, better and reaching a much wider market!

A simple snack of dried, blended fruits, makes a wonderful treat at any time of the day. I was kindly sent a pack of both the Apple & Raspberry, and Apple & Mango. They are super tasty and really chewy. I absolutely love both combinations of flavours. Perfect to throw in a lunch box, for grown ups and children alike! And remember:

1 snack + 1 positive act
