Lip balm is one of the most frequently applied beauty products, yet often contains a cocktail of preservatives, fragrances and all kinds of chemicals that you wouldn’t generally decide to take into your body. However, the chemicals found in lip balms (lipsticks, toothpaste and lip liners also included) have a direct path to the inside of your mouth – and therefore to your bloodstream.
Many people reach out for the trusty tub of vaseline, but petroleum jelly is a by product of oil, and can cause many allergic reactions, as well as containing carcinogens. It actually forms a seal, preventing moisture from getting out, but also from getting in. Phenols are another common lip balm ingredient, and they prevent bacteria from building up. This sounds great, until you do your research and find out that it can irritate the skin, and even cause damage to the nervous system when absorbed regularly – and what’s more regular than several daily doses of lip balm?!
These are just a couple of questionable ingredients, but there are many synthetic colours, fragrances and preservatives and if you don’t feel like ingesting them, then when not try something more natural?
Something like this gorgeously special ‘Ultimate Lip Balm’ from Inika. A favourite brand of mine, Inika use only the finest natural, organic ingredients, and are always 100% cruelty free and vegan. MyPure kindly sent me a stick of this luscious lip balm to try out.
At £15.50 for a lipstick style tube of lip balm, this may seem like a real splurge, but it’s worth every penny as far as I’m concerned. The beautiful, silky moisture comes from a blend of shea butter and coconut, with candelilla and carnuba waxes. With a hint of peppermint and vanilla, this is a beautifully scented lip balm – the smell is so calming and makes me feel relaxed every time I apply it.
I’ve found that I need to apply this lip balm way less than anything else I’ve ever used – it’s really thick and creamy, and stays on the lips for ages. It clears up dry, chapped skin really quickly and one little stick is lasting ages! Definitely my new favourite lip balm and a beauty essential – it will be priceless in the winter months.
