Bamboo Straws – Reusable, Biodegradable, Sustainable

Did you know that some local councils are unable to recycle paper straws, because they are contaminated?

Of course, the option is to home compost your paper straws instead. But have you considered reusable straws? I’ll be giving you the chance to win a gorgeous set of straws at the end of this post, so please keep reading.

They come in all types, shapes and sizes; including bendy or straight, metal, plastic or bamboo. In terms of which is the most sustainable, and good for the planet, I would always go for bamboo every time. They are also the most comfortable on the mouth, and are very easy to clean.

Bamboo is completely natural and kind on the environment, as it requires no soil depleting pesticides or fertilisers. Growing at up to 30cm per day, in a variety of conditions, it has a much shorter havest time than hardwoods and is highly sustainable. It can grow in arid regions where droughts cause other crops to fail and since the roots are left in place after harvesting, it helps to preserve vital moisture in the soil.

Bamboo also has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, so it’s great for your health and the straws are easily kept clean.

White Spring offer lovely sets of bamboo straws which are organic, reusable and biodegradable. I’ve really enjoyed using these – they look so elegant in a glass compared to a plastic straw – perfect for those impressive cocktails. They are so easy to clean, especially with the full length brushes, and even lipstick comes off hassle free. You can even put them in the dishwasher.

8 high quality bamboo straws, 2 long cleaning brushes and a cotton carry bag, so you can take your straws with you on the go. All for just £12.99.
