As Plastic Free July draws to an end, here’s a little reminder that those new habits you’ve made can be kept forever. Plastic Free July is not just for summer – it’s for life! Some of the changes you have made may have been difficult, and some very easy. I always start on the “one thing at a time” principle, and today I’m going to share with you a very simple soap swap, which will quickly turn around your plastic consumption in the bathroom.
It’s all about the liquid to solid switch. Many of us find liquid soap more convenient, but it often comes in plastic bottles – even if you go for a refill option, you’re still buying a large plastic bottle, albeit an improvement. Bar soap, however, more often comes packaging free, or in cardboard packaging. There are some absolutely gorgeous natural soaps out there – and I always go for organic where possible, because it’s better for the skin, and for the environment.
One of my favourite brands is Organii, who offer a great range of vegan, cruelty free, natural products; including mineral sun protection, liquid and bar soaps, shower gels, mouthwashes, and arnica gel.
By replacing mineral oils with organic vegetable oils, these products nurture the skin, effectively slowing its ageing process and speeding the healing process. Anything you put onto your body is absorbed and can potentially enter your blood stream! Free from certain mineral oil derivatives, the soaps are not drying on the skin. And without synthetic aromas, preservatives and colours, they are truly natural.
I’ve recently tried two of the brand new cream soap scents – Green Tea & Lime, and Verbena & Lemon. These organic soap bars are manufactured using the traditional art of soap making, in open batch kettles. Natural essential oils, shea butter, and extracts of green tea, lime, lemon and verbena are adding after saponification. And they come in simple, beautiful cardboard packaging. I found the soaps very gentle on my skin – even with frequent hand washing, and they are great to use on your body too – so swap out that plastic bottle of shower gel. I find the scents intoxicating and they really make me feel refreshed – Green Tea & Lime is my favourite of the two, and I can’t help myself from sniffing the bar anytime I’m in the bathroom!
So, if you’re looking to make that simple swap and reduce your plastic footprint, soap is a great place to start. You can get 20% off the cream soaps for the rest of July too. I’d love to know what changes you’ve made during Plastic Free July – please let me know in the comments.
Organii sent me these soaps free of charge, for review purposes. All opinions are my own.
